ATS Patient Education Expands in 2014December 1, 2014 at 12:14 am
The ATS Patient Information Series, which describes topics in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep diseases, treatments, and tests in patient-friendly terms in free downloadable PDFs, expanded considerably in 2014 with 16 new and updated fliers—and the demand is growing.
Since a Google AdWords campaign to promote the patient education materials in search results was launched in February 2013, the series has received more than 200,000 downloads. At press time, the most downloaded fliers through the ad campaign were OSA in Adults (more than 17,000 clicks), followed by Cough, Sarcoidosis, Air Pollution and Health, and Influenza. Since being added to the campaign in September 2014, the Enterovirus flier has generated more than 8,300 downloads. The Google AdWords campaign is supported by a Google for Nonprofits grant.
“In addition to more patients accessing these materials directly, more organizations have asked to incorporate these materials into their routines, which we highly encourage,” says Christopher Slatore, MD, MS, chair of the ATS Patient and Family Education Committee. Dr. Slatore is an investigator at the Portland VA Medical Center Health Services Research and Development, which incorporated the Patient Information Series into its electronic medical record system in 2013. “These organizations have included Adventist Health, based in Roseville, CA, and the PETAL Network, which is a group of institutions across the U.S. sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to find ways to prevent and treat ARDS.”
Clinicians are encouraged to download, print, and share the PDFs with patients and their families:
