Research Groups Urge Congress to Restore NIH Funding

November 2014

This week, the ATS joined more than 300 medical societies and patient and research groups with the Ad-Hoc Group for Medical Research in a letter urging Congress to restore the NIH budget to at least the pre-sequestration funding level of $30.7 billion.

The letter states that while the NIH budget has failed to keep pace with inflation for the last decade, "other countries are greatly increasing their investments in biomedical research, thereby creating an innovation deficit for the United States." It also points out that another temporary spending measure, rather than an omnibus, adds "uncertainty to a system that is already under stress." The letter urges Congress to pass a final omnibus spending bill for Fiscal Year 2015 before the end of 2014.

Congress has until December 11, 2014 to pass either an omnibus spending measure finalizing 2015 funding or another temporary measure to extend government program funding.
