ATS Joins Letters to CMS Expressing Concerns with Meaningful Use Requirements

October 2015

This week the ATS joined the AMA and several other medical organizations in a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services expressing concern with stage 3 meaningful use requirements. "Meaningful use" refers to the data sharing standards for electronic medical records (EHRs) must meet before they satisfy CMS requirements.  Practices that fail to meet meaningful use requirements will see reductions in Medicare reimbursements.

The letter, while celebrating the rapid expansion of EHR use in the U.S., notes that only 12% of providers met CMS's stage 2 meaningful use requirements.  The letter expressed strong reservations about moving forward with stage 3, when so few providers are currently meetings stage 2 requirements.
