Last week, the American Thoracic Society joined over 120 medical and scientific organizations in a letter to Congress expressing concerns with recent travel restrictions placed on travel for federal physicians and scientists to attend professional conferences. The letter points out a recent GAO study that documents a dramatic reduction in the number of federal scientists and physicians attending scientific conferences. The letter notes that federal scientists play a crucial role scientific and medical progress and their reduced ability to attend scientifically rigorous meetings and conferences impedes scientific progress.
The ATS will continue to advocate for the ability of federal scientists to attend scientific conferences while assuring accountability, value and transparency in federal employee travel.
