ATS Urges HUD to Adopt Smoke Free Public Housing Policy

March 2015

This week, the American Thoracic Society and 23 other organizations joined in a letter to the Department of Housing and Urban Development urging the agency to adopt a smoke free policy for all federal funded housing units. The letter references the 2006 U.S. Surgeon General Report that documents the known adverse health effects of second hand smoke as well as a 2015 CDC study that found 2 in 5 US children are exposed to secondhand smoke and that number rises to 7 in 10 among African American children.

HUD is expected to release a proposed policy on smoking and public housing in the near future.
