Children’s Hospitals GME Bill Signed into Law

This week, President Trump signed legislation renewing the Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) program into law. The Senate unanimously passed the legislation, sponsored by Sens. Casey (D-PA) and Isakson (R-GA), on Sept. 4. The bill passed the House in July, also by unanimous vote, where it was sponsored by Reps. Green (D-TX) and Burgess (R-TX). The legislation renews the CHGME program for the next five years. The CHGME program, created in 1999, provides critical funding to 58 children's teaching hospitals to support the training of pediatricians and pediatric specialists, including pediatric pulmonologists, critical care and sleep specialists. The program is credited with training more than half of the country’s pediatric providers annually.
