Congress Working on Short-term Measure to Avert Government Shutdown

The Congress is working to pass a Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 short-term spending measure funding all government programs, including the NIH and CDC, before the current continuing resolution expires on Jan. 19, 2018. If government spending legislation is not passed by midnight on Jan. 19, the federal government will shut down. Although congressional leaders have not reached the overall two-year budget deal that they have been working towards, it appears likely at this point that a short-term measure funding the government until Feb. 16 will be passed, providing Congress with more time to work out a budget deal and final FY2018 funding. The short-term FY2018 measure will fund government programs, including the NIH, at the current FY2017 spending levels.
