In September, the ATS joined the American Lung Association and with public health and health professional organizations in a letter to the Bureau of Land Management calling for an immediate end to coal mining on federal lands. The letter notes that burning coal is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. and globally that that continuing to allow coal mining is incompatible with the Biden Administration’s goal to de-carbonize the U.S. power grid. The Bureau of Land Management is responsible for issuing permits for coal mining and other natural resource extraction from all federally-owned land.
