In Memoriam: Carole Lesley Marcus

Dr. Marcus, a professor of pediatrics at CHOP and Penn, died Nov. 20 after a brief hospitalization. She grew up in South Africa and obtained her medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand. She completed residency training at SUNY Brooklyn and fellowship training at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. She was recognized nationally and internationally for her expertise in sleep medicine. From 1991 to 2003 Dr. Marcus was a member of the faculty at Johns Hopkins; she was then recruited to CHOP and Penn.

Her patients remember her as compassionate and a great listener, with a holistic approach to care. Colleagues were equally touched by her dedication and spirit.

Pediatric sleep specialist and ATS Immediate Past President David Gozal, MD, MBA, regarded her like a member of the family. “Such generosity and kindness was so typical of her,” he says. “We have lost a friend, great colleague and scientist, sister, and most of all, a beautiful person.”
