Resident Boot Camp Offers Year-Round Benefits

“I’ll definitely have more confidence and familiarity with things I’ll be seeing on my first day of fellowship.” – Resident Boot Camp Participant, 2019

The 2019 Resident Boot Camp was another great success! Led by ATS members who are leaders in their field, 160 future fellows (and future ATS members!) completed the two-day course at ATS 2019. By completing the course, they got a head-start on the knowledge and skills they’ll need to succeed as first-year fellows. Fellows came to ATS 2019 in Dallas from around the world, including Saudi Arabia, Brazil, the Philippines, Japan, and Singapore. All of the participants were beginning a pulmonary or critical care fellowship program this July.

As valuable as the Resident Boot Camp is for fellows, the advantage of the program doesn’t stop there. The Boot Camp aims to reduce the early-training burden on individual fellowship programs. When our fellows clock in on their first day, they already have the clinical and procedural skills needed to begin their clinical training with confidence. The course provides hands-on skills-training, including:

  • Airway management, including endotracheal intubation.
  • Fiberoptic bronchoscopy and accompanying procedures.
  • Noninvasive and invasive ventilator management.
  • Thoracentesis.
  • Calibration and operation of hemodynamic recording systems.
  • Supervision of the technical aspects of pulmonary function testing.
  • Insertion and management of chest tubes.
  • Proficiency in use of ultrasound.

The Resident Boot Camp also includes lectures and networking opportunities, as attendees learn from field experts and from one another.

Check out our newsletters throughout the year for information on all of our education opportunities, from webinars to CME and MOC opportunities. And don’t forget that conference resources are available for free on the ATS website for conference attendees for up to one year after the conference. You can also view select sessions (including from the Boot Camps!) on the ATS Facebook page.
