Gregory P. Downey, MD, ATSF Elected Secretary-Treasurer of the ATS

Congratulations to Gregory P. Downey, MD, ATSF, who has been elected ATS secretary-treasurer for the 2019-2020 term.

Dr. Downey has been a member of the ATS since 1988 and has served on the AII Executive Committee and Board of Directors. He has also served as chair of the Assembly on Allergy, Immunology and Inflammation. He currently serves on the Basic Science Core Committee and the MITT Committee, and is deputy editor of the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology.

Dr. Downey will begin his term at the Plenary session during the ATS 2019 International Conference.

  

Reminder: ATS Scholar Editor Search

The American Thoracic Society has opened the search for an editor-in-chief of ATS Scholar, the Society’s newest, fourth journal, a peer-reviewed, open-access journal focusing on clinical education, medical education, meeting proceedings, research education, patient-focused education, and study/trial designs.

It is anticipated that the editor-in-chief will be named for a five-year term that officially starts Jan. 1, 2020 but will begin working on developing the new journal this year. The Search Committee is seeking candidates with editorial experience and a background in clinical and/or medical education.

Perspectives On E-Cigarettes From An Inhalation Toxicologist Who Is Also A Mother Of Teenagers

The Tobacco Action Committee (TAC) of the American Thoracic Society presents a live webinar on e-cigarettes, entitled "Perspectives On E-Cigarettes From An Inhalation Toxicologist Who Is Also A Mother Of Teenagers."

The talk will be presented by Ilona Jaspers, PhD, professor of pediatrics, microbiology and immunology and deputy director of the Center for Environmental Medicine Asthma & Lung Biology at the University of North Carolina (UNC). Dr. Jaspers is also Director, Curriculum in Toxicology & Environmental Medicine at UNC.

The talk will focus on Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) and how they work, epidemiology and rapid rise in adolescents usage, the potential for nicotine addiction in adolescents, utility in smoking cessation and emerging data on toxicity.
