Join the Walking Challenge at ATS 2019!

The ATS Walking Challenge, supported by Mylan, is back as part of the ATS 2019 International Conference. Walk, stay active, and compete with colleagues all while helping the ATS Foundation Research Program!

For every participant who walks 30,000 steps during ATS 2019, Mylan will make a donation of $100 to the ATS Foundation, up to $50,000. The top three overall steppers will win a prize, as well as three randomly-selected participants who reach the 30,000 steps goal.


You can register onsite at the ATS Walking Challenge Booth located in Lobby D, Level 2 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas.

 

Research Awards Announced

  • ATS Foundation/Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals Research Fellowship in Sarcoidosis Awarded

Congratulations to Landon W. Locke, PhD, of Ohio State University who has been awarded the ATS Foundation/Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals Research Fellowship in Sarcoidosis. The $80,000 award will help fund Dr. Locke’s study, “Abnormally Sustained M2-like Macrophage Polarization Drives Sarcoidosis Granulomas.”

  • ATS Foundation/Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. Research Fellowship in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Awarded

Congratulations to Paul Andrew Reyfman, MD, MS, of Northwestern University, who has been awarded the ATS Foundation/Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Research Fellowship in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
The $100,000 award will help fund Dr. Reyfman’s research, “Single Cell Transcriptomic Analysis of Pulmonary Fibrosis.”

Joint Clinician-Educators’ Forum at ATS 2019

The American Thoracic Society (ATS), the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD) and the Pediatric Pulmonary Training Directors Association (PEPTDA) will host a joint Clinician-Educators’ Forum at the ATS 2019 International Conference again this year.  The session will feature discussions on best practices in teaching and strategies for improving education in a variety of settings, as well as the presentation of the 2019 Innovations in Fellowship Education Award.  Ren Ashton, MD, and May Lee, MD, ATSF will chair the forum. Registration is required and the fee is $25. 

Topics will include:

  • Writing and reading letters of reference.
  • Using simulation to teach end-of-life communication.
  • Development of a multidisciplinary assessment tool for focused cardiac ultrasound.
  • Cultivating a growth mindset.

When: 1– 4 p.m., Saturday, May 18, 2019

  • Voting for Section Leaders is open online until May 1, 2019. Section membership is optional, and all sections are housed with assemblies.
  • The Assemblies on Respiratory Structure and Function and Clinical Problems are pleased to announce their next journal club, where Dragos M. Vasilescu, PhD, from the University of British Columbia, will present the article, "Non-invasive imaging biomarker identifies small airway damage in severe COPD,” from AJRCCM. E-published Feb. 25, 2019. MeiLan Han, MD, MS, of the University of Michigan, and Miranda Kirby, PhD, of the University of British Columbia, will join the discussion.

ATS Fellow Application Will Open May 1

The ATS Fellow (ATSF) designation is a mark of distinction that recognizes the accomplishments, dedication, and contributions of ATS members to the Society, as well as to the fields of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. 

The application process for the third class of ATS Fellows will open May 1, 2019 and remain open until July 31, 2019. If you have been an ATS member for five years or longer, we invite you to apply. If you would like to be notified when the application process opens, email membervalue@thoracic.org. Be sure to include your name, and please indicate “ATS Fellow” in the subject line.
