Lessons from the Tuskegee Experiment, 50 Years After Unethical Study Uncovered

This year marks 50 years since it came to light that the nation’s leading public health agency, the Public Health Service, conceived an unethical “research study” - the Tuskegee Experiment – that lasted for 40 years. The participants? Black men in a rural community in the South who existed in a state of quasi-slavery, making them extremely vulnerable and the agency’s treatment of them that much more sickening.

In “Fiftieth Anniversary of Uncovering the Tuskegee Syphilis Study: The Story and Timeless Lessons,” Martin Tobin, MD, former editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, revisits this dark period in American history, expertly illustrating how present-day health disparities have roots in the racism that made the Tuskegee study possible.

World Asthma Day

ATS Recognizes World Asthma Day

On World Asthma Day, recognized annually on May 3, the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS), of which the American Thoracic Society is a founding member, called on international respiratory communities to work together with colleagues, patients, communities and health care providers to close the gaps in asthma care.
Although asthma cannot be cured, it is possible to control symptoms and reduce or prevent asthma attacks or exacerbations.

There are key gaps in care which require intervention to reduce preventable suffering, as well as the costs incurred from uncontrolled asthma. Read the full statement!

Call for Papers: AJRCCM Asthma-Focused Special Issue

With an impact factor of 21.4 in 2021, the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine is increasingly better positioned to help raise awareness of the current progress and continuing needs in asthma research. Therefore, we are dedicating a new, special issue to the topic of asthma in both adults and children, which will be published in February 2023.

We invite asthma researchers and scientists to submit original papers for consideration for this focused issue. We welcome submissions involving basic and translational research, epidemiological science, clinical trials, and community-based research.

Submissions must conform to the Journal’s formatting requirements and should include a cover letter mentioning the special asthma-themed issue. If you have questions, please contact Marc Bendian.

The top three submissions have been chosen, and the finalists are ready to pitch their proposals to a panel of translational science experts representing academia, industry, and governmental sectors in front of a live audience at the ATS International Conference!

The panel, with audience participation, will vet these proposals with each presenter, providing a unique “shark-tank” like learning environment that fuels real-time feedback and propels the strategic thinking required for these novel ideas to become innovations. One grand prize winner will receive a $10,000 prize! Don’t miss it!
