This week, the ATS joined over 30 organizations in joint comments to the Food and Drug Administration urging the agency to take swift action on e-cigarette liquid nicotine. The letter is in response to FDA's request for comments how the agency should regulate liquid nicotine.
The letter outlines the known public health risks for liquid nicotine, including addiction, acute toxic effects, long-term effects, and liquid nicotine flavorings being particularly dangerous for children. The letter also noted that FDA had both the legal authority and obligation to regulate these products. The letter called for FDA to take several actions on liquid nicotine including:
- Child-proof packaging
- Written and graphic warning labels
- Public awareness campaigns
- Prohibition of flavors
- Limiting nicotine quantity and concentrations
The ATS will continue to advocate for FDA to take quick and meaningful action to regulate all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes.
