ATS to File Brief in Supreme Court EPA Mercury Air Toxics Case

January 2015

The U.S. Supreme Court has announced that it will hear an industry challenge to EPA's final Mercury Air Toxics Standards (MATS) rule. Earlier, industry lost a similar challenge to the MATS rule in the D.C. District Court of Appeals.

The ATS will submit an amicus brief in the DC District Court of Appeals supporting EPA's MATS rule. The brief will summarize the known health effects of exposure to the various pollutants covered in the rule. The ATS intends to file a similar brief in the Supreme Court case.

When fully implemented, the MATS rule will significantly reduce mercury, heavy metals, acid gases and other pollutant emissions from coal, oil and gas power plants in the U.S.
