Another Survey Documents the Rapid Rise in Youth E-cigarette Use

This week, researchers at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research released results of a survey that further documents the rapid increase in youth e-cigarette use.  The survey notes that from 2017 to 2018, the percent of students who reported vaping nicotine in the past 30 days increased 90 percent among 12th grade students, 96 percent among 10th grade students and 74 percent among 8th grade students. This data closely matches the Youth Tobacco Survey data released earlier this year that showed a similar spike in youth e-cigarette use.  In response to the data, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, will hold a press event tomorrow where he is expected to warn youth, teachers and parents about the adverse health effects of e-cigarette use.

The ATS has consistently urged the FDA to take more aggressive action to regulate all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes.  While the FDA has promised future action on e-cigarette regulation and addressing youth use, in particular, the agency has as of yet not issued concrete regulation action to reduce youth e-cigarette use.
