EPA Announces Roll Back of Vehicle Efficiency Standards/Greenhouse Gas Standards

This week, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt announced the EPA’s decision to revisit the car and light-truck greenhouse gas and fuel efficiency standards for model years 2022-2025.  Administrator Pruitt’s announcement starts the regulatory process that will likely result in a roll back of the first ever greenhouse gas tailpipe emissions standard for cars and light trucks.

Since the passage of the Clean Air Act, California has retained the authority to establish pollution standards that exceed EPA standards, which other states have the option to adopt, as well. While not explicitly stated in the EPA announcement, Pruitt’s action will likely jeopardize the waiver status that allows states to create and enforce such standards.
