Senate Passes Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education Renewal Bill

This week, the Senate unanimously passed legislation sponsored by Sens. Bob Casey (D-PA) and Johnny Isakson (R-GA), renewing the Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) program, entitled the Dr. Benjy Frances Brooks Children’s Hospital GME Support Reauthorization Act. The bill passed the House in July, also by unanimous vote, where it was sponsored by Reps. Gene Green (D-TX) and Michael Burgess (R-TX). The legislation renews the CHGME program for the next five years. The CHGME program, created in 1999, provides critical funding to 58 children's teaching hospitals to support the training of pediatricians and pediatric specialists, including pediatric pulmonologists, critical care and sleep specialists, and is credited with training more than half of the country’s pediatric providers annually. President Trump is expected to sign the legislation into law.
