Trump Proposes Significant Cuts to Health and Environment Programs in Proposed FY2020 Budget

Yesterday, the Trump administration released the general outlines of its proposed budget for the fiscal year 2020 federal budget.  While full budget details are not yet available, the broad outline of the Trump administration budget revealed yesterday show significant cuts in health and environmental programs, including:
  • 12 percent cut in NIH funding.
  • 10 percent cut in CDC funding.
  • 31 percent cut in EPA funding.
  • 2.2 percent cut in VA medical research funding.
  • $845 billion cut in Medicare spending over 10 years.
  • $1.5 trillion cut in Medicaid spending over 10 years.

In general, Defense, Veterans, and Homeland Security programs saw increases in the proposed FY2020 budget while all other programs were cut.  The most severe budget cuts were seen by the EPA.

The Trump administration had proposed similar budget priorities and legislative proposals to reduce federal spending in the two previous years.  The majority of the administration’s budget recommendations have been rejected by Congress.  It is expected that the current Trump administration proposed budget will also be largely dismissed by Congress.
