ATS Issues Statement Supporting NIAID Director Anthony Fauci

This week, the ATS issued a statement in support of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) Director Anthony Fauci, MD, a key member of the President’s Coronavirus Task Force. Dr. Fauci has come under criticism recently by some members of the Trump Administration and elements of conservative media.

Director of the NIAID for over 35 years, Dr. Fauci has led the U.S.’s scientific research efforts on infectious diseases, including the AIDS epidemic, serving six different presidential administrations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when information from the Trump Administration has been confused and, at times, inaccurate, Americans have relied on Dr. Fauci for accurate scientific analysis and public health guidance.

In the statement, the ATS Executive Committee says, “Developing fact-based public policies provides the best opportunity to minimize the economic, societal and health impact of this serious and potentially fatal disease. Nowhere has that public health leadership been on greater display than with Dr. Anthony Fauci.” The ATS statement continues, “As we move forward to combat COVID-19, his scientific knowledge, expertise, and counsel will continue to be of critical importance.” Read the full ATS Statement on Dr. Fauci here.
