Voters Support Tobacco Control Ballot Measures

Voters in three states considered ballot measures on tobacco control and in all three states voted in favor of strong tobacco control policy.

In Colorado, by a margin of 67 percent to 32 percent, voters passed a 1.10/pack increase in the state excise tax on cigarettes, increased taxes on other tobacco products in instituted a new state excise tax on e-cigarette products.  The measure also included further tobacco excise taxes in future years.  A portion of the new revenue will be dedicated to state tobacco control efforts.

In Oklahoma, by a margin of 59 percent to 41 percent, voters rejected a ballot measure that would have diverted future payments from the tobacco Master Settlement Agreement away from state tobacco control programs.

Oregon voters, by a margin of 66 percent to 34 percent, approved a $2.00/pack increase in cigarettes, increased taxes on premium cigars and instituted a 65 percent excise tax on e-cigarette products.  A portion of the tax revenue will go to support state tobacco control programs.
