Sen. Markey Introduces Air Pollution Monitoring Bill
This week, Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) introduced legislation to provide additional funding for “micro-level” – or city block level – air pollution monitoring. The bill authorizes $100 million in EPA funding to install air pollution monitors capable of monitoring air pollution exposures at the city block level.
“The American Thoracic Society supports Sen. Markey’s legislation. This bill will expand air pollution monitoring resources and empower communities to identify hotspots with higher levels of unhealthy air pollution. This bill helps will make science work at the community level, and is an important step in addressing the unacceptable health disparities due to air pollution,” says ATS member and Harvard air pollution researcher Mary B. Rice, MD, MPH.
