ATS Comments on EPA’s Proposal to Address Cross State Ozone Pollution
This week, the American Thoracic Society submitted comments in support of EPA’s proposed federal implementation plan to reduce the transport of ozone and ozone pre-cursor air pollution across state borders. At issue is air pollution that is generated in “up wind” states that is transported to “downwind” states – making it impossible for downwind states to EPA air quality standards. In the proposal, EPA is expanding the number of states and point sources of NOx emissions – a pre-cursor for ozone formation – needing to comply with emissions reductions.
The ATS comments supported EPA’s proposal and noted the well-documented adverse health effects from exposure to ozone pollution and noted the potential significant public health benefits that could be achieved with reducing ozone emissions.
