ATS Joins Letter to Department of Energy Supporting Efficiency Standards for Furnaces
The ATS joined the American Lung Association and other health groups in comments on the Department of Energy’s proposal to require higher efficiency standards for consumer gas-powered furnaces. The DOE has issued a proposed rule that would raise the efficiency standard for gas furnaces from 80 percent to 95 percent efficiency.

As noted in our comments to DOE, nearly 50 percent of homes in the U.S. are heated with gas powered furnaces, making home furnaces an important source of emissions for both indoor air and outdoor air pollution. Further, the use of propane or natural gas in consumer furnaces is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, so establishing greater efficiency standards for new consumer furnaces will address indoor and outdoor air pollution as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
