FDA Announces Plans to Issue Nicotine Product Standard for Combustible Tobacco Products
In related news, FDA publicly stated its intent to issue a proposed product standard for combustible tobacco products that would establish a maximum nicotine content. FDA plans to issue the proposed product standard by May 2023. While FDA has not yet issued details on the product standard, the announcement appears to be a follow up action to the 2018 FDA Advanced Notice of Proposed Rule-Making that sought input on establishing low-nicotine content level for cigarettes. FDA was proposing to establish the nicotine content in cigarettes at a level is that non-addictive or “minimally” addictive with the goal of reducing the addictive potential of cigarettes.
