ATS Urges Biden Administration to Finalize MSHA Silica Exposure Standard

In January, the ATS members Leonard Go MD and Silpa Krefft met with staff from the White House Office of Management and Budget to urge the Biden Administration to issue a final Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) standard to limit miner’s exposure to silica dust.  MSHA has proposed to issue a first ever silica exposure limit for metal and non-metal miners of 50 ug/m3 and an action level of 25 ug/m3.  During the meeting, Dr. Go and Dr. Krefft supported the proposed standard but noted the silica exposure limit needs to be supported with strong monitoring and enforcement measures.  It is hoped that the Administration will issue a final MSHA silica standard in the near future.
